Allergy Testing & Treatment

Allergy testing and treatment in Houston, TX. Diagnosis and management in Spanish, with affordable pricing.

In Houston there's hardly a month without allergies. Cedar arrives in winter, oaks and other trees in spring, grass in summer and ragweed in fall. Add mold, which the city's humidity keeps around all year. That's why so many people live with a stuffy nose for months without knowing exactly what sets it off or how to calm it.

What we treat

  • Allergic rhinitis: sneezing, runny nose, itchy eyes and throat
  • Congestion that lasts weeks or flares in certain seasons
  • Hives and itchy skin
  • Insect sting reactions that aren't life-threatening
  • Allergies that make asthma worse

What the visit looks like

The doctor asks when symptoms start, where you are when they get worse and what you've tried. That, plus an exam of the nose, throat, ears and lungs, usually pins down the type of allergy. When indicated, lab tests are ordered. If the exact allergen needs to be identified with specialized testing, we help you with a referral to an allergist.

Treatment

Depending on the case: non-drowsy antihistamines, nasal sprays for inflammation, eye drops or skin treatment. We show you how to use them properly, since a nasal spray aimed the wrong way loses much of its effect, and which changes at home cut symptoms: washing bedding in hot water, keeping windows shut on high-pollen days and showering after coming in.

When it's an emergency

Swollen lips or tongue, trouble breathing, a suddenly hoarse voice or dizziness after a sting, a food or a medication mean calling 911. That isn't handled in a clinic visit.

Frequently Asked Questions

A cold usually lasts about a week and can bring fever or body aches. Allergies don't cause fever, last as long as the exposure lasts, and itchy eyes or nose are a telltale sign.

Yes. Hives that last more than a few days are worth checking to look for the cause and get treatment that controls them. If they come with lip swelling or shortness of breath, call 911.

Steroid sprays for allergies, yes, with the right technique. Instant-relief decongestant sprays shouldn't be used more than three days in a row because the congestion comes back worse.
