The arm contraceptive implant protects for several years, but eventually it has to come out: because it expired, you want to get pregnant, it's causing discomfort or you simply prefer another method. At Clínica Hispana Cruz 4 we remove it during the visit, under local anesthesia, explaining each step in Spanish.
Before removal
The doctor feels the arm to locate the implant and asks how long you've had it and which method you plan to use next. If the implant can't be felt, an imaging study may be needed before attempting removal. If you have it, bring the card or paper with the date it was placed.
How it's done
- The skin is cleaned and local anesthetic is given, which feels like a brief pinch
- A very small incision is made near one end of the implant
- It's gently pushed out and the whole rod is removed
- The cut is closed with an adhesive strip and a pressure bandage
It usually takes a few minutes. You can leave right away and get back to your routine without waiting.
Aftercare
- Keep the pressure bandage on for one or two days and the adhesive strip until the cut closes
- A bruise or tenderness for a few days is normal
- Get checked if redness spreads, there's pus, fever or pain that worsens
Protection after removal
Fertility returns quickly once the implant is out. If you don't want to get pregnant, start another method right away; we can set it up at the same visit, for example with pills or the shot.
