Strep Test

Strep test in Houston, TX. Fast result and treatment in Spanish, with affordable pricing.

A severe sore throat can come from a virus, which clears on its own, or from strep bacteria, which needs antibiotics. From the outside they look very similar, and the only way to know for sure is to test. At Clínica Hispana Cruz 4 we run the rapid test during the visit and the result is ready in minutes.

Signs that point to strep

  • Throat pain that starts suddenly, with pain when swallowing
  • Fever
  • Red, swollen tonsils, sometimes with white spots
  • Swollen, tender neck glands
  • In children, stomachache, headache or vomiting

If there's a cough, runny nose or hoarseness, a virus is more likely.

How it's done

A long swab gently rubs the back of the throat and the tonsils. It causes a brief gag, but it lasts seconds. The sample is tested at the clinic while you wait.

If it's positive

The doctor prescribes the right antibiotic. Most people feel better in a day or two, but the full course must be finished to avoid complications such as rheumatic fever, which can affect the heart. After 12 hours on antibiotics and no fever, a person usually stops being contagious and can return to school or work.

If it's negative

In adults it's almost always a virus and treatment is for relief: fluids, rest and medicine for pain and fever. In children, when suspicion is high, the doctor may order a culture to confirm.

At home

Replace the toothbrush after finishing the antibiotic, don't share cups or utensils and wash hands often, especially with kids in the house.

Frequently Asked Questions

You'll know within minutes, before you leave the exam room.

Most sore throats are caused by viruses, and antibiotics don't touch viruses. Taking them unnecessarily means side effects and helps bacteria become resistant.

Usually after 12 hours on antibiotics and no fever. If the school wants a note, ask for it during the visit.
