Ultrasound uses sound waves to build a real-time image of the inside of the body. There's no radiation, it doesn't hurt and it's done right at the clinic, so the doctor can often see on the spot what used to mean sending you somewhere else.
Studies we perform
- Abdominal: liver, gallbladder, pancreas, kidneys and spleen, for example with pain after fatty meals or suspected stones
- Pelvic: uterus and ovaries, useful with very heavy periods, pelvic pain or to check cysts
- Pregnancy: confirming the pregnancy is inside the uterus, estimating the weeks and seeing the heartbeat
- Thyroid and soft tissue: neck lumps, lymph nodes or masses under the skin
How to prepare
- Abdominal: nothing to eat for six to eight hours beforehand; a fasting gallbladder and a quieter bowel give a clearer picture
- Pelvic: arrive with a full bladder, drinking about four glasses of water an hour before and not urinating
- Thyroid, soft tissue and later pregnancy: no special preparation

During the scan
You lie on the exam table, a warm gel goes on the skin and the transducer glides over the area. Firm pressure is common, particularly when the bladder is full. Most scans take 15 to 30 minutes.
The result
The medical team reviews the images and explains in Spanish what was found and what comes next. If a finding needs another study, such as a CT scan, or a specialist's evaluation, we help you with the referral and give you the report.
